What our travelers say
Hotel Moderno earns consistent praise from group leaders and tour directors for two things above everything else: where it sits and how the staff treats you. At the corner of Calle Arenal, just steps from Puerta del Sol, the hotel puts groups in the absolute center of Madrid — close enough to the metro, grocery stores, and souvenir shops that logistics stay simple, and lively enough that students have stumbled into authentic Easter processions just by walking out the front door. The front desk team is regularly called out for being not just friendly but genuinely proactive: on more than one occasion, staff have arranged for the breakfast buffet to open as early as 6:30 a.m. to accommodate groups with early airport transfers, a small gesture that makes a real difference on travel days.
Breakfast draws strong marks as well. The buffet is served in a private room reserved for groups — a detail our travelers appreciate — and the spread tends to be substantial, with eggs, meats, fruits, vegetables, and pastries all represented. Rooms are clean and well-maintained, and a few leaders have noted they feel generously sized by European city-center standards. That said, it is worth setting expectations around two things: the elevators are notably small, which the hotel staff handle by proactively reassigning guests who need lower floors, and the walls between rooms are thin, so groups that tend to stay up late chatting should be reminded early to keep the volume down.
Hotel Moderno works particularly well for small to mid-sized groups — the intimate scale means staff can be genuinely attentive rather than managing a crowd. It is a strong fit for student programs that want to be in the thick of Madrid without sacrificing cleanliness, service quality, or a proper breakfast to start the day.
