What our travelers say
Hotel Moderno earns its reputation almost entirely on two things: where it sits and who works there — and both happen to be excellent. Calle Arenal places guests a short walk from the Puerta del Sol, with a metro station, grocery stores, and souvenir shops right at hand. Group leaders return trip after trip noting how effortlessly the location keeps a school group moving through the city. One leader's group even caught an Easter procession passing practically outside the front door. The staff deserve equal credit. Tour directors consistently highlight a front desk team that is responsive, efficient, and genuinely warm — and when one group needed an unusually early breakfast to make a 7:00 a.m. flight out of Barajas, the hotel called in extra staff to open the buffet at 6:30 without complaint. That kind of operational flexibility matters enormously when you're wrangling a group on a tight itinerary.
A few practical things to set expectations around. The elevators are small — notably so — and the hotel has shown willingness to relocate guests who need lower floors, which is a good sign of staff attentiveness but worth flagging for groups with mobility considerations. Rooms are genuinely on the compact side, as is common for a city-center European property, though several leaders found them perfectly comfortable and well maintained. The walls are thin, so groups should be briefed early on noise courtesy, particularly in the evenings. Breakfast ranges from perfectly adequate to genuinely impressive depending on the visit — one group reported a full spread of eggs, meats, fruits, and pastries served in a private dining space, which adds a nice sense of cohesion for a group meal.
Hotel Moderno is a reliable fit for student and teacher groups who want to be in the thick of central Madrid without paying a premium for it. It works especially well for programs with full days out in the city, where the compact rooms are simply a place to sleep rather than a place to linger. Groups that are noise-sensitive or include travelers with mobility needs should plan ahead, but for most school tours passing through the Spanish capital, this is a property that leaders have been happy to return to — and recommend.
