What our travelers say
Hotel de l'Univers earns its spot as a standout on the Passports circuit, and group leaders have been consistent about why: the location inside Saint-Malo's ancient walled city is genuinely hard to beat. Sitting right on the Place Chateaubriand, steps from the ramparts and a short morning walk from the beach, it puts groups at the center of one of Brittany's most atmospheric towns the moment they step outside. Check-in runs smoothly — staff have repeatedly arrived to find room keys and paperwork already organized — and the building itself, a handsome property within the intramuros, adds to the sense that you're actually in Saint-Malo rather than just sleeping near it. One group called it their favorite hotel of an entire tour, and that kind of enthusiasm shows up again and again across programs. Breakfast is a genuine strength. Group leaders consistently describe it as plentiful and well-laid-out, with ample seating and attentive staff. One thing worth flagging: the morning egg option is a French-style individual egg boiler rather than a buffet tray of scrambled eggs, which can catch American students off guard. It's a small cultural note, not a complaint, but worth mentioning in your pre-trip briefing. Rooms are clean and comfortable, though tour directors caution they tend toward the smaller side, and sizing isn't perfectly uniform across the hotel — so some students will have a bit more space than others. There's no air conditioning, but the thick stone walls and coastal position keep things cool enough that groups visiting in shoulder season have found it a non-issue. One practical logistics note: the hotel sits inside the walled city, which means vehicles can't pull directly to the door. Groups should expect to walk luggage a short distance from outside the town walls — manageable, but worth planning for with larger contingents. Overall, this hotel suits groups who benefit from being dropped into a walkable, historically rich environment, where the setting itself does some of the teaching. It works especially well for programs with even a single afternoon or evening free in Saint-Malo, when the ramparts, the square, and the seafront are right there to explore on foot.

ExcellentGroup Leader· April 2026· LBFP
Excellent location in the heart of town. The breakfast and waiting staff were outstanding. Would highly recommend returning.
ExcellentGroup Leader· June 2026· LBFP
Neat location within the city walls near the coastline kept rooms cool despite no AC. The unique building, walkable city access after dinner, and a short morning stroll to the beach were highlights. Breakfast offered great variety with plenty of seating.
ExcellentTour Director· April 2026· YTL
The location is perfect and breakfast is delicious. Rooms tend to be on the small side, and room sizes can vary across the group, so some students may have more space than others.
