This nine-day itinerary cuts a clean diagonal across the heart of Central Europe, moving from the half-timbered lanes of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber through the Alpine capitals of Munich and Innsbruck, then west into the Swiss lake country around Lucerne, and finally north to the castle-crowned Neckar River city of Heidelberg.
