What our travelers say
Hotel du Palais des Papes earns its reputation on two fronts that matter most to traveling groups: location and character. Sitting directly on the Place du Palais — the cathedral square — puts travelers steps from the Palais des Papes itself and within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and Avignon's compact historic center. Group leaders repeatedly describe this positioning as ideal, noting that mornings run smoothly when the day's first sites are essentially at the front door. The building itself adds something that no amount of modern construction can manufacture: a genuine sense of place. Evaluators consistently mention the warren-like corridors, the distinctly European room proportions, and an atmosphere that feels authentically rooted in Avignon's history rather than merely decorated to suggest it. The staff draws particular praise across multiple visits and program groups. Leaders describe the team as genuinely friendly and operationally capable — one group arrived several hours behind schedule and found check-in handled without a hitch. Breakfast is a recurring highlight as well, with the spacious breakfast room and lobby drawing favorable comments from both group leaders and tour directors. That said, travelers with heartier appetites or expectations shaped by American-style breakfast buffets should know the spread leans toward a traditional French continental format — satisfying and authentic, but not expansive. A few evaluators have also noted that certain areas of the building show their age and could use some freshening, and the reception area can feel busy during peak check-in windows, so coordinating arrival timing with your tour director is worth doing. This hotel is a strong fit for school and student groups touring Provence who want genuine immersion in the fabric of a French city rather than a generic chain experience. Its central location makes it especially practical for programs with full itineraries — less time on buses, more time actually in Avignon. Groups that appreciate historic European atmosphere and can travel light through narrower hallways will feel right at home here.
