What our travelers say
The Rappen Hotel earns its reputation in Rothenburg ob der Tauber through a combination of genuine character and consistent execution. Group leaders across multiple tours have singled out the breakfast as a genuine highlight — not just adequate fuel before a long day, but a spread worth lingering over. One tour director specifically called out the famous oversized Rothenburg rolls as a particular treat, and multiple group leaders described the dining room as spacious enough to seat the entire group comfortably at once, which is rarer than it should be. Rooms are consistently described as clean and well-sized, the staff helpful, and check-in smooth — the small operational details that quietly determine whether a group tour starts well or sideways. The hotel's position just outside the historic fortified wall means private motor coaches can pull up directly in front for drop-off and pick-up, a practical advantage that tour directors have flagged repeatedly and that anyone who has wrestled with medieval street layouts will immediately appreciate. Built in 1603 and thoroughly renovated, the property carries genuine old-town atmosphere without sacrificing modern comfort — flat-screen TVs, private bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi in every room. A sauna and beer garden round out the amenities, and a dedicated journaling room has been appreciated by school groups looking for a quiet space outside of tour hours. The market square is an eight-minute walk, which is close enough to be convenient but far enough that the hotel sits in a calmer pocket of this very popular town. The Rappen is a strong fit for student and teacher groups traveling through Bavaria who want a grounded, reliable base in one of Germany's most visited medieval towns. Groups that have stayed here tend to come back — a detail that says more than any single evaluation. It works especially well for programs with early morning departures or late arrivals, given how smoothly the logistics flow at this property.
