What our travelers say
The Exzellenz Hotel earns its name in a few specific ways that matter to group travel. Its position near the entrance to Heidelberg's historic quarter means groups can be walking cobblestones within minutes of dropping their bags, and the nearby tram stop at Adenauerplatz keeps onward movement easy. Tour directors consistently point to the breakfast setup as a practical win — a well-stocked buffet with coffee available from as early as 6:30 in the morning, which is genuinely useful when groups need to be out the door before the city wakes up. Lobby coffee available throughout the day is a small touch that group leaders have noticed and appreciated, and the rooms — particularly the triples — have impressed as among the more spacious options groups encounter on multi-stop itineraries. A few things are worth knowing before you arrive. The hotel's layout involves half floors and split hallways, which can take a moment to figure out, especially with a large group in tow. Air conditioning is not universal throughout the property — corner rooms tend to handle the warmth better thanks to cross ventilation and a fan, but it's worth keeping in mind for summer programs. Bus logistics near the property require a bit of coordination, as the street configuration makes loading slightly awkward. And groups with late arrivals should be aware that front-desk coverage has a cutoff in the evening; while an emergency line exists, response times can vary, so it's worth building that into your pre-trip briefing. Overall, the Exzellenz is a solid fit for school and student groups moving through Heidelberg on a multi-city European itinerary. It punches a little above its three-star category in feel and location, and the early breakfast service suits groups on tight morning schedules. It works best for programs that arrive at a reasonable hour and don't require late-night front-desk support — plan around those parameters and it's a property that tends to leave group leaders and tour directors genuinely satisfied.

What group leaders & tour directors say

ExcellentTour Director· March 2024· BAV
Conveniently located near the old town entrance, this stylishly designed 3-star-plus property impressed with a well-arranged box breakfast and even offered machine coffee as early as 6:30 a.m.
ExcellentGroup Leader· March 2024· BAV
The triple room here was the largest of the trip. All-day coffee in the lobby was a welcome bonus.
ExcellentTour Director· April 2024· BAV
The location makes bus loading a bit tricky, but the experience overall was excellent.
ExcellentGroup Leader· July 2023· BAVS
The hotel was nice overall. Dining on-site was not part of the group's experience during this visit.
GoodTour Director· June 2024· CIWP
The property has no front-desk coverage after 8 pm, so when key cards were lost it took four calls to the emergency number before someone responded. Worth noting for groups with late arrivals or evening needs.
GoodGroup Leader· July 2023
The layout can be a bit confusing, with half floors and split hallways. Air conditioning is limited to a few rooms, though corner rooms benefit from cross ventilation and a fan to compensate.
