An experienced traveler shares her Top 10 travel-related songs…
These classic tunes can get you psyched for your journey. Play them while packing, or on your outbound flight. We’re told they calm air travel jitters, and are almost guaranteed to lull you into snooze mode when played alongside a humming airplane engine! Pop in those ear buds, turn up the volume (but not too high!) and off you go!
From the Canning Town train I see a billboard high
There’s a big silver plane rising up into the sky
And I can make out the words ‘seven flights every day’
Says six of those birds are bound for JFK
Former front-man of Dire Straits, Knopfler’s distinctive guitar riffs get you off the ground in style.
Out past the fountain, I left by the station
I start the day in the usual way
Then think, well, why not and stop for a coffee
And begin to recall things that you sayPluck up the courage and snap, it’s gone again
I start humming, “When Doves Cry”
Can someone help me, I think that I’m lost here
Lost in a place called America
When Tori sings about stopping for a coffee, you can just about picture her doing so.
Start spreadin’ the news, I’m leavin’ today
I want to be a part of it
New York, New York
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it
New York, New York
Even if you’re departing from someplace else, every special event needs Sinatra’s “New York, New York!”
Here I am
On the road again
There I am
Up on the stage
Here I go
Playin’ star again
There I go
Turn the page
Seger woefully whines about his long hair and life on the road in this 70s classic.
They say that the road
Ain’t no place to start a family
Right down the line
It’s been you and me
And lovin’ a music man
Ain’t always what it’s supposed to be
Oh, girl, you stand by me
I’m forever yours
When Steve Perry laments "Lovin’ a music man ain’t always what it’s supposed to be” we all understand.
I’ve a pretty senorita waiting for me
Down in old Mexico
If you’re ever in Alaska stop and see
My cute little Eskimo
Oh my sweet Fraulein down in Berlin town
Makes my heart start to year
and my China doll down in old Hong Kong
Waits for my return
The quintessential traveling song! (from the '60s)…
I’m on my way to New Orleans this mornin’
I’m leavin’ out of Nashville, Tennessee
They’re alwas having a good time down on the bayou
Lotd, them Delta women think the world of me
… and it’s rival, from the '70s!
London calling, yes, I was there, too
An’ you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
London calling at the top of the dial
After all this, won’t you give me a smile?
This gem from the '80s makes you WANT to go to London!
Quand il me prend dans ses bras
Il me parle tout bas,
Je vois la vie en rose
Il me dit des mots d'amour
Des mots de tous les jours
Et ca me fait quelqu chose
Impress your French teacher by learning and understanding Edit Piaf’s lyrics!
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
'cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
