Empowering GhanaThis program takes place in Kasoa, which is located less than an hour from Accra, the capital city of Ghana. Originally, the area was called the Ivory Coast, then the Gold Coast, and finally the Slave Coast. The majority of slaves who were brought to Europe, South America, the Caribbean and the United States came through this portion of West Africa. Slave castles at Elmina and Cape Coast still stand today as a tribute to those who lost their lives during this cruel chapter in world history and as a reminder of why it should never be repeated. Kasoa itself is a safe town where locals are always willing to chat and teach you their distinctive greeting (a finger clicking handshake). Despite the natural beauty of the Ghanaian landscapes and the depth of the country's cultures and heritage, communities like Kasoa are facing a variety of challenges ranging from the lack of running water and a workforce untrained in the use of modern tools such as the Internet are just a few. Nor are there currently enough teachers or facilities to offer free education to all children; many roads are not paved and the republic is still heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. This is a lovely place to offer your much needed hand. |
