Changing China

In an attempt to discourage the internal migrations of Chinese people from the poor agrarian rural areas to the much more prosperous eastern metropolitan areas, the Chinese government has essentially refused to provide free education to the children of these (mostly) illegal migrant workers. Passports Service Learning volunteers will work at one of the only middle schools in the Beijing area that is not supported by the government and that operates as a private, non-profit institution. The school has an endless list of needs and projects including painting classrooms, building furniture, and improving sanitation facilities. Service Learning volunteers will also teach English pronunciation and other essential skills such as Internet navigation.
