Cancelled trips.

I was disappointed to hear of my schools decision to cancel my son's trip to Italy. I now feel we are at the mercy of the school even though it was my financial outlay. I am curious to know how long it takes to obtain a refund less the cancellation charges? Can an individual defer a trip or does the entire group have to defer the trip?
